Besides fishing, you can also find the Cabo Pulmo sanctuary, which is a must-see for snorkelers and divers. Last and most importantly, famous beaches and communities are nestled within the incredible beautiful landscape.
East Cape Los Cabos is blessed with stunning natural beauty. On top of that, its infrastructure is growing rapidly, making it a prime location for real estate investors. And now, East Cape is one of the most sought-after locations for those looking to build their new beach home.
Fishing was the original tourist attraction along East Cape. And, this region remains popular among skilled anglers. For example, Punta Colorada, which is perched above the surf overlooking the Sea of Cortez, is known as the “roosterfish capital of the world.” Then, Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore tournament is a summer tradition in Buena Vista.

Being prepared makes all the difference. A little due-diligence on your part will go a long way.
Cabo’s location provides a very exciting place to fish. So, find striped marlin, blue marlin, black marlin, Pacific red snapper, white sea bass, mahi-mahi, and the illusive roosterfish, just to name a few.
Probably the biggest lure for Los Cabos fishing is Marlin. Catch them from mid-April to mid-June. Black and blue marlin are the most targeted species near Los Cabos, but there are others too.
Unlike other types of marlin, black marlin lives only in the Pacific Ocean. And, they’re considered to be a continental-shelf species. That means they usually remain near land. So, they’re unlikely to be seen out in the open water.
Based on migration patterns, most marlin captains don’t venture into the Pacific. They typically prefer to fish almost exclusively east and southeast of Los Cabos. Regardless, marlin are known to be the most exciting fish to catch.
Spanning from July through October, Bisbee’s hosts the three Los Cabos fishing tournaments that escalate from one to the next. In July, the East Cape Offshore tournament is the first of two warm-up competitions before the big Los Cabos fishing tournament in late October.
The Bisbee’s Los Cabos fishing tournament expanded to the east side of Baja California Sur back in 2000, to host the East Cape Offshore in the small town of Buenavista. This one is “Los Cabos fishing as it used to be.” In addition to marlin, the East Cape Offshore includes dorado and tuna.
Bisbee’s Los Cabos fishing tournaments quickly became very popular. Therefore, a third event was created back in 2002, called Los Cabos Offshore. This one is nick-named the “Little Bisbee’s.” And, it’s more of a social event full of camaraderie, where old fishing buddies reunite, share stories and spend a few days warming up before that final event, the big daddy of the them all…Bisbee’s Black and Blue…five days of the most thrilling sports fishing in the world
Taking place at the end of October, this is the last Los Cabos fishing tournament of the series and is the most prestigious of the them all. It offers the highest winnings of any sports-fishing tournament in the world. And, it attracts some of the best boats with some of the biggest names in fishing. These fishermen have very deep wallets and usually enroll in all tournament options across the board, often paying $60,000 or more in entry fees and calcuttas (daily jackpots).
Snorkeling and diving are also spectacular along the East Cape, particularly at Cabo Pulmo. This national marine sanctuary is home to eight fingers of live coral reef. And, because of its protected status, Cabo Pulmo now boasts the highest concentration of marine life in the Sea of Cortez.
Also, once called “The World’s Aquarium” by Jacque Cousteau due to its huge biodiversity, the Sea of Cortez itself is the most biologically-diverse body of water on Earth.
Two of the recommended reefs to explore are, firstly: The islet, which is located south of the bay of Cabo Pulmo, it has a maximum depth of 60 feet. You’ll find yourself impressed by the intense colors of the marine life vividly moving around this promontory of the reef.
Plan a day trip from Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo or even La Ribera to dive into the Cabo Pulmo reefs. Organize the trip yourself if you’re an experienced diver or plan with a dive company if you’re a first-timer!
Among the rocks, see the emerging hedgehog and blowfish. In the sandy bottom, buried rays are common too. Definitely, an experience you wouldn’t like to miss!

Bahía Pulmo within the park is home to the oldest of only three coral reefs that you can find on the west coast of of both the North and South American continents. As you’ll see, this reef boasts hard coral fingers from rock outcroppings near the coast.
After becoming a national park in 1995, Cabo Pulmo became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005. So now that it’s a well-protected site, after many years of overfishing and exploitation, Cabo Pulmo has grown back in flora and fauna more than double what it once was. Access to the Cabo Pulmo National Park, by dirt road, is 16 miles north of La Ribera, a small town that is part of the municipality of Los Cabos. There, a population of over 2000 people live in the area. This place is home to fishermen, workers from the nearby resorts and a small number of ranchers and farmers.
The village runs with solar electricity and well-water. There are only four restaurants in the area, and a limited number of stores. Therefore, plan in advance what you might need when visiting this incredible place.
Cabo Pulmo is a great place to visit all-year-round. Although, the best time to visit is between July and January. During that timespan, the north winds do not blow very hard, and the water keeps a warm and steady temperature of 75-80° Fahrenheit.
The diversity and abundance of marine species within the Cabo Pulmo reef thrive there mainly due to the warm and cold water convergence in that area. To explain, the tropical waters of the Sea of Cortez mix with the colder water of the Pacific in this diverse nest of aquatic flora and fauna.
Cabo Pulmo is home to more than 200 species of fish, and ten species of stony corals. On top of that, Cabo Pulmo is regularly visited by large mammals, such as the humpback whale, dolphins, and sea lions.
