Bahía Pulmo within the park is home to the oldest of only three coral reefs that you can find on the west coast of of both the North and South American continents. As you’ll see, this reef boasts hard coral fingers from rock outcroppings near the coast.
After becoming a national park in 1995, Cabo Pulmo became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005. So now that it’s a well-protected site, after many years of overfishing and exploitation, Cabo Pulmo has grown back in flora and fauna more than double what it once was. Cabo Pulmo is a great place to visit all-year-round. Although, the best time to visit is between July and January. During that timespan, the north winds do not blow very hard, and the water keeps a warm and steady temperature of 75-80° Fahrenheit.
The diversity and abundance of marine species within the Cabo Pulmo reef thrive there mainly due to the warm and cold water convergence in that area. To explain, the tropical waters of the Sea of Cortez mix with the colder water of the Pacific in this diverse nest of aquatic flora and fauna.
Cabo Pulmo is home to more than 200 species of fish, and ten species of stony corals. On top of that, Cabo Pulmo is regularly visited by large mammals, such as the humpback whale, dolphins, and sea lions.
Access to the Cabo Pulmo National Park, by dirt road, is 16 miles north of La Ribera, a small town that is part of the municipality of Los Cabos. There, a population of over 2000 people live in the area. This place is home to fishermen, workers from the nearby resorts and a small number of ranchers and farmers.
The village runs with solar electricity and well-water. There are only four restaurants in the area, and a limited number of stores. Therefore, plan in advance what you might need when visiting this incredible place.
Named “The World’s Aquarium” by Jacque Cousteau for its amazing biodiversity, the Sea of Cortez is quite a natural wonder. To begin, The Sea of Cortez is the most biologically diverse body of water on Earth. As such, this body of water supports over 900 varieties of fish. On top of that, it supports over 2,000 species of marine invertebrates. Also, It is home to many endemic species. These are creatures that only exist there, and nowhere else.

Find smaller sea creatures in the Sea of Cortez like dolphins, sea turtles, sea lions, tuna, sea bass, grouper, yellowtail, shark, marlin, scallops, lobster, snapper, shrimp and more. Wow, that was quite a list. These underwater creatures make snorkeling very exciting indeed.
There are also many large sea creatures, the largest of which are the migratory whales. These whales include California gray whales, humpback whales, and even orcas or killer whales.
